Varsity Head Coach: Matthew Smith
This school year will be my 2nd year teaching at Ponderosa, and my 4th year teaching high school in Colorado. I am 29 years old and I grew up in Los Angeles, California. I graduated from Chapman University in 2016 where I was a starting pitcher on the baseball team for 4 years. I live in Centennial with my wife-to-be (August 18th) Kyra, and my dog Shyla. I have coached high school baseball the past 7 years and last year I was Pondo’s Freshmen Golf Coach.
While my athletic roots are in baseball, I have always loved being around golf. I’ve golfed since I was a kid, my dad was the president at his country club and is one of the starters at The Genesis Open, and I have bartended at TPC Colorado, Heritage Eagle Bend, Red Rocks Country Club, and Castle Pines Country Club.
In the spirit of being transparent I am currently a 12.5 handicap - I was a 10 last summer, but my busy life has begun to present difficulties to my short game.
Many of your sons are far better golfers than I am. I fully understand, and genuinely appreciate that. I might not be able to knit pick each players’ swing - but I will promote confidence, effort, and a focus on enjoying the game.
My college coach once told me that you play sports to have fun - and you have fun in sports when you win. I believe that my role as head coach is to prepare our guys to win, and that is what I will try my best to do.
